DAWG - WILD BLUE
When I have the occasional fruit beer, I don't like to mess around — I like bold flavors. A common disappointment with many fruit beers is that they don't follow through — they have more of a fruit-like flavor than the taste of the actual fruit.
That can't be said about Wild Blue. This is a beer that is bursting with blueberry flavor and aroma.
Wild Blue is made by the Blue Dawg brewery, which is owned by Anheuser Busch, better known as the maker of Budweiser. Don't let prejudice against an international megacorporation prevent you from trying this above-average fruit beer.
Apparently there is great hatred for this beer from some online quarters. I discount many of these opinions, however, especially since some of the reviews start by complaining about the color of the beer. Of course it's purplish red — it's a blueberry beer! Why would the color offend
anyone?
Another common complaint is that the beer's blueberry flavor tastes fake, or like soda. I didn't think so at all — after subjecting myself last year to a series of horrible lemon and orange beers, Wild Blue tasted very natural to me.
It is certainly sweeter than the average beer, but not so sweet that it steps into Kool-Aid territory. The blueberry flavor does overpower the malt and hops, but I don't buy a fruit beer to appreciate the grains in
it.
Wild Blue also has a nice solid mouthfeel and an
8 percent alcohol content that helps make the beer substantial.
Since Wild Blue is an Anheuser-Busch product, it should be readily available throughout the country.

HISTORY Sterling : Perched 300 feet above the town of Calistoga, Sterling Vineyards offers panoramic views of Napa Valley. An
aerial tram carries visitors up the hill to the winery, whose architecture was modeled after that of the Greek
island of Mykonos, where Sterling founder Peter Newton once lived. The brilliant white stucco stands out
dramatically against the rugged Mayacamas and Vaca mountain ranges that flank each side of Napa Valley.

The winery's towers house eight bells from
London's Church of St.
Dunstans-in-the-East, originally founded in

Tasting Notes Riesling: Effusive aromas greet the nose in this finely crafted 2007 Riesling. Fragrant jasmine and flinty mineral perch
atop a sweet peach core. On the palate, captivating flavors align in perfect balance of ripe summer fruit held
aloft by a vibrant mineral quality and a bite of green apple. A nice tart finish lifts the senses and rounds out
the slightly off-dry mid palate. Food Matches
Riesling:
The delicate interplay of acid and fruit pair well with food both savory and
sweet such as roasted duck in a cherry sauce, pork sautéed with apples as well as a variety of lightly spicy
Asian dishes. Tasting
Notes Merlot: The Merlot welcomes the nose with bright cherry, blackberry and
vanilla aromas counterbalanced with subtle cherry-cola notes. On the palate, mouth filling cherry-berry
tannins fold together with rich flavors of
blackberry pie and juicy plum to offer a nice, rounded mouthfeel
and a long finish. Food
Matches Merlot : The generosity of this wine pairs well with a variety of dishes from slightly spicy Mexican
food to good ol' home-cooked chicken pot pie.
